The assumption implicit in the text that the either/or is about flowers versus ENOUGH food, not just expensive food, is strange. I guess that says something about the time and about the class this is aimed at.

I agree that flowers earn points, but why is it an either/or situation? It's
just another way to tell women that they can't have it all, and more
importantly that shouldn't even try. Or if they insist upon getting the
total package, they're going to have to come up with the remainder
themselves.

I'm mostly joking. And I think it's another class signifier as well.

I'm just saying, being brought flowers – even a single gardenia – would garner serious points. I can always eat again later.
