Ocular proof that I do occasionally leave the apartment.
We took a few turns around the Brooklyn Flea on Saturday with visiting friends Alison and Bill (the very same who introduced us to the Giant Orange a couple months ago). I like going to the Flea, though it does tend to get a bit old, seeing the same things peddled week after week, even if I go just to browse. But it had been several weeks and I had already resolved not to buy anything, so I could cruise around and look politely at everything — even look longingly at a few things. Here’s what caught my attention:
Kids, long before FarmVille, folks played with actual tangible items and made up their own stories.
I thought these plates were charming. I had to wait a few minutes for another admiring couple to move out of the way of this shot.
You know what that brownstone you’re renovating needs? A giant metal lobster.
Or maybe you only rent, in which case you should consider these apartment-sized metal penguins.
(Actually, I think the penguins are completely adorable.)
First glance: That lampshade is a pretty color.
Second glance: Are those . . . HOOVES?
Yes, and yes, they’re real. It’s like a surreal animal version of the Leg Lamp. (It’s a major award!)
Finally, of all the things at the Flea, these are what I wanted most of all. Enough to want to enter back into the work force in a managerial/boss-type capacity, just so I’d have the opportunity to use them:
Stamps of Disapproval — seriously, how hilarious and awesome are these? I’m particularly fond of “Are you happy with this?” and “Huh.” They were part of the offerings of this year’s RISD Graphic Design MFA graduates, collected in a show called Make, Do. Check out the other stuff they did — I love the whimsy and lightness of it all, particularly the Pencil Tips and Tangram States.
